For the past 15 years or so, our growing family has enjoyed the beaches and people of Manzanita whenever we could manage to get away.
Five years ago we fond out that our then 2 years old has a neuromuscular disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and would never be able to walk. As you can imagine enjoying the beach with your able-bodied siblings when it's difficult to even sit up without help is a hugh challenge an necessarily results i missing out on a lot of fun times.
At the end of June 2008 we rolled into Manzanita for our annual week to discover that a ramp had been installed at the foot of Laneda and there were beach wheelchairs available for use, and one is actually kid-sized!!! Over the next six days, we borrowed that chair 4 times and were able for the first time to enjoy walking on the beach and playing at the edge of the waves as a complete family. It was fantastic!

The purpose of this letter is to send our sincere appreciation to you and the citizens of Manzanita for providing a wheelchair for our disabled daughter during our recent family vacation to Oregon. Your city came through for our family after many frustrating days trying to locate a beach wheelchair along the Oregon coast. Larger coastal cities, including Seaside, currently do not have such chairs available to disabled or elderly visitors and citizens to enjoy. We truly appreciate your compassion and consideration of this population. Having the ability for us all to enjoy the beach, together as a family, is such a relief. Additionally, our daughter loves the ocean. Providing her with the mobility to access your magnificent beach was such a gift.
